Sketchbook Journey in Brooklyn Workshop

I’m very excited to announce that I (Ohn Mar Win) and the brilliant artist and illustrator Samantha Dion Baker will be hosting a full day of sketchbook art in Brooklyn in October 2022. During this special workshop Samantha and I will present creative ways of filling your sketchbooks with inspiration from your experiences and surroundings.You will be directed to Sam’s website when clicking Sign Up for payment.

Samantha and I will guide you through an exploratory process that encourages creative confidence and unique perspectives through sketchbook painting. We’ve designed this workshop to be very friendly and approachable—perfectly suited to hobbyists and those who are looking to integrate painting into their lifestyle, or relatively new painters who want to develop their sketchbook practice.

The day-long workshop will help with:

• Finding and integrating creative expression into your daily life.
• Building a sketchbook by embracing everyday found objects and the ways they can inspire us.
• Keeping a sketchbook as a personal record of moments in our lives.

We will be using watercolours, pens and pencils and focusing on a variety of topics, including:

• considerations for the composition of your page

• how to seek inspiration from, interpret, and paint from photographic reference

• simplifying and painting sketches from real life subject matter

Throughout the day Samantha and I will demonstrate many different approaches to sketchbook practice. We will begin by capturing our journey to the Boerum Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn through the use of imaginative sketches. Then we’ll find inspiration from what surrounds us by recognising that even ordinary items and experiences are valid and relevant.

ART MATERIALS INCLUDING SKETCHBOOKS WILL BE PROVIDED by:

All supplies will be for communal use on the table, so there is no need to bring anything unless you are attached to your own pens and paints. Note that the sketchbook provided is yours to keep! Some water brushes will be provided but please bring your own brushes for personal preference.

A buffet lunch will be provided with coffee and refreshments throughout the day. Please let us know in advance if you prefer a vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free option for lunch.

This is the FIRST workshop I’ve held in the USA for 3 years. It’s also a unique opportunity to see many sketchbooks by Sam and myself who have 15 years combined experience between us.
